Edward Motjope, from Makwassie Hills, is in his second year of studies pursuing a B.ED Senior and FET phase at North West University. He is the new bursary recipient, funded as part of Bokomoso Solar’s scholarship programme, which currently sponsors a total of four students in the Maquassi Hills and Matlosana Local Municipality communities.
By serving as a volunteer teacher at his previous school, Edward has demonstrated his dedication and willingness to give back to his community, which was one of the many attributes that made him eligible to receive this scholarship.
“I am very happy to have received the Bokamoso Solar Scholarship as it has given me the opportunity to pursue a degree in Education. Although I registered late, I was able to catch up with my studies without having any financial stress. I would like to encourage other students out there to apply for opportunities when they present themselves,” said Edward.
This bursary programme, which launched in 2020, exclusively targets learners from communities in this specific municipal area and is aimed at providing opportunities to matriculants wishing to study at tertiary institutions. In addition to the financial contribution made by Bokamoso Solar, the programme provides mentoring and psycho-social support to ensure that beneficiaries are able to reach their goals.
“The mentoring and psycho-social support is important because it provides students with opportunities that develop them academically and help them experience life away from home, which will equip them with the skills to navigate different environments once they have finished their studies and move into the working world.
Moreover, scholarships can give hope to students, especially those from disadvantaged areas, as they learn that circumstances do not define them and that their dreams are achievable,” said Celiwe Mabaso, Community Operations Manager for Bokamoso Solar.
The bursary fund covers tuition, accommodation, stationary, textbooks, laptop, administration fee, meals, and transport and living allowance. It is exclusively available to qualifying students within the within the Kgakala and Kanana area.
