A reading programme has been launched to help reduce literacy backlogs accumulated by Grade 4 learners, especially as a result of Covid-19 lockdowns. This programme has already placed seven learner assistants in four local primary schools, within the areas of Kanana and Kgakala.
Funded by Bokamoso Solar and implemented by the READ Foundation, this programme aims to improve the learners’ written language and reading skills by implementing different learning activities to develop their vocabulary.
“We believe that investing in the education of our youth is an investment in the future of our country. This programme is just one of the ways we are working to improve literacy and ensure a brighter future for the youth in our communities,” stated Claire Phutieagae, Bokamoso Solar’s Community Operations Officer.
The learner assistants have been trained to implement various learning activities aligned with the CAPS curriculum, helping to develop the learners’ vocabulary and reading skills. They are also trained in comprehension strategies such as evaluation, summarising, and making inferences.
Parents are not left out of this programme as they also receive training on how to support their children at home. This holistic approach aims to ensure that learners receive consistent support both in and out of the classroom. Additionally, the learner assistants are supervised and mentored by READ Project Managers, and have the opportunity to study an accredited Professional Development Course.
Reahola Primary School HOD, Mrs Oliphant, commented on the impact of the programme, stating, “There is a lot of progress made. Some learners who struggled with reading show a lot of improvement and the learner assistants are doing their best to help the learners.”
